Seven Stories
A group of seven animals meet under a sacred tree and form a friendship based on conversation and ideas. As they grow older, they begin to wonder what truth even means. The seven friends decide to leave each other and the forest of their birth to depart on a journey to find it, promising to return at the appointed time to tell their story and their truth to their friends.
The book reads like a labyrinth or a puzzle rather than a straightforward tale, using invented and altered language. Meaning shifts and destabilizes as the search unfolds.
Reviews
Through speculative surreal fiction, Hazel Cline develops her own theogony and original mythology. Seven Stories shares some common ground with James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake; however, it presents a more approachable examination of metacognitive ideas, clarifying the archetypal patterns of the collective unconscious with animal totems.
